The Scott Adams Memorial Skatepark under the
direction of the Kingsport Parks & Recreation Department
celebrated its one year anniversary on November 12, 2006.
The park which is open seven days a week from dawn until
dark has been a favorite attraction of both youth and young
adults who bike and skate throughout the region.
The park is approximately 10,000 sq. feet and has two bowls
and a streetcourse. Adjacent to the back of the park is
dirt moguls which bikers use for jumping.
Attendance at the park has been enormous.
Weekdays average around 100 per day with Saturdays and Sundays
easily reaching around 200 users per day. The park reaches
out well beyond our city borders with frequent visitors
from Asheville,NC, Morristown, Knoxville, Johnson City,
Bristol, and Greeneville, TN
.
Recently, Byerly Construction completed stamped concrete
within the park and a new sidewalk area outside the park.
Not only does the stamped concrete look real nice but it
is non skateable which serves as a barrier between the skating
surface and the adjacent parking lot. Also, a pedestrian
crossing light has been installed at the corner of Center
St. and Lynn Garden Drive for safe access to cross the street.
This past summer the park hosted the first "Extreme
Showdown" on July 16th during Funfest.
The event which showcased the best skaters and bikers in
various categories was sponsored by Angry Penguin and Kingsport
Parks & Recreation.
There was a total of 85 bikers and skaters who participated
in the event and over 450 spectators. There was various
prizes as well as cash that was given away to the contestants.
The Scott Adams Memorial Skatepark still is not a fully
completed facility. There are various things at the park
that didn't get completed due to money constraints.
